Leo Tolstoy – The Kingdom of God… – eBook [Freebie of the Week]
Leo Tolstoy is best known for his novels and stories,
but he also wrote powerfully about his Christian faith. Perhaps the best known of his theological works is The Kingdom of God is Within You, in which he “speaks of the principle of non-violent resistance when confronted by violence, as taught by Jesus. Tolstoy sought to separate Orthodox Russian Christianity (which was merged with the state) from what he believed was the true gospel of Jesus Christ, specifically the Sermon on the Mount.” (via Wikipedia) This work, and especially its emphasis on non-violence, would be one of the major influences on the life and work of Gandhi.
Tolstoy’s vision of a non-Constantinian Christianity that was not embedded with the political powers of the age, is over a century later, still one that is sorely needed in our times.
